Depending on which specialty, programs often receive from hundreds to thousands of applications every year. To be able to process all the applications, programs often use minimum requirements to filter candidates even before looking at them. On the other hand, there are also criteria to shortlist candidates for interview.

Many competitive specialties like plastic surgery, otolaryngology, etc. Such programs are usually able to review each applicant and often have no minimum requirements established. However, even without minimum requirements, it is clear to each candidate that application for a competitive specialty must be extremely strong and targeted.

On the other hand, specialties like internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, etc. Most programs use a particular minimum score to select candidates for further consideration. Many programs do not use an absolute minimum score as criteria, but instead use the term preferred. For example, the program can write: We do not have an absolute cut-off, but we prefer scores greater than In general, it means that candidates with Step 1 but Step 2 can be selected for further consideration.

Without a doubt, all programs prefer first attempt passage. While the first scenario is actually ideal and proves you have the capacity to improve, the second scenario can be much more difficult to express to Program Directors and Interview Committees.
