Magic weapons shouldn't just be based on their damage output, but on their usefulness in certain boss fights, and how easy they are to use.
The Razorpine is a powerful magic weapon with potentially the highest damage output in the game for the class, mostly because its projectiles are fired so rapidly. If you liked the Space Gun, you'll like the Laser Machinegun. Takes a couple of seconds to wind up, but can deal big, big damage.
The Nimbus Rod is hands-down one of the best magic weapons in the game. Place a cloud and let it rain on your enemies - great for dealing with slow-moving bosses, or the segmented Destroyer. Almost any armor that is crafted from Hardmode bars is a good choice at the very beginning of Hardmode.
A player requires that extra defense just to survive the onslaught of powerful enemies. Later in the game, you can start to experiment with different armor sets and their bonuses. Adamantine Armor is the best armor set for mages early in Hardmode because it reduces mana usage. The accessories in Hardmode let a player finetune their build. Some of those pre-Hardmode accessories, specifically the Celestial Cuffs , will still be useful in Hardmode.
You should hold onto all your accessories in an organized chest. Hardmode Terraria is full of different accessories, Wings, and mounts that can complement a Mage build. Some accessories, like the Celestial Shell , are useful in every class.
Wings, like the Fishron Wings, can be the make or break in a late-game boss fight. You should experiment with the different items available and figure out the way you like to play.
