Carrie Rochon McAfee , the first female principal of a traditional high school in Texas and a Houston Independent School District educator for more than half a century, died after a brief illness Sept.
She was After graduating from Texas Southern University , McAfee began her career at Yates High School where she worked as a teacher, counselor and assistant principal. She broke the barrier. McAfee, who was endearingly referred to as the Madison "Marlin Mama," stayed at the school for 15 years and later worked at the district administrative level where she implemented a parental program called Project Reconnect, which focused on getting parents more involved in the schools.
To become a teacher was really a pinnacle in the life of these ladies from small towns," said McAfee's daughter, Rhonda Rochon Cotton. It wasn't just a job; it was a lifestyle. In the desegregation era, "school was a place where democracy happened and cultural awareness," Cotton said.
